Both asphalt millings and hot mix asphalt have their unique pros and cons. It’s important to understand these differences to determine the best choice for your project.
- Asphalt Millings
Asphalt millings are the recycled asphalt material obtained from old roads that are being repaved. They are an environmentally friendly and cost-effective method of paving.
Pros:
- Cost-effective: Asphalt millings are less expensive than new asphalt.
- Environmentally friendly: Using millings reduces the demand for new asphalt, which is good for the environment.
- Durable: Millings can be compacted just like new asphalt, making it resistant to wear and tear.
- Low maintenance: Once compacted, millings harden and require little maintenance.
Cons:
- Not as smooth: Asphalt millings don’t give as smooth a finish as new asphalt.
- Weather susceptibility: In cold climates, millings may not compact as easily or may loosen over time.
- Limited lifespan: Millings don’t last as long as new asphalt.
- Hot Mix Asphalt
Hot mix asphalt is a combination of approximately 95% stone, sand, or gravel bound together by asphalt cement, a product of crude oil. This mix is heated and laid down on the surface to be paved.
Pros:
- Smooth finish: Asphalt provides a very smooth, clean finish that’s ideal for driveways, roads, and parking lots.
- Long-lasting: When properly maintained, asphalt surfaces can last 20 years or more.
- Versatility: Asphalt can be formulated to withstand various loads, weather conditions, and high volumes of traffic.
Cons:
- Cost: Asphalt is more expensive than asphalt millings.
- Maintenance: Over time, asphalt may require more maintenance such as sealing and filling cracks.
- Not eco-friendly: Production of new asphalt involves extracting and refining petroleum, which contributes to environmental pollution.
Choosing between the two options depends on your specific project needs, budget, and environmental considerations.
