Sealcoating your driveway is an important part of maintaining asphalt pavement. Here are some considerations to guide you:
- Frequency: Generally, it is recommended to sealcoat asphalt driveways every 2-3 years, but this can depend on the climate and the amount of traffic your driveway sees. If your driveway is showing signs of wear and tear, such as cracks or fading, it may be time to sealcoat.
- Weather conditions: Ideal sealcoating conditions are typically in the warmer months. The temperature should be above 50°F during the application and for 24 hours after. Additionally, the weather should be dry for at least 24 hours both before and after the sealcoating is applied. So, late spring, summer, and early fall are usually the best times to sealcoat your driveway.
- New asphalt: If you’ve just installed a new asphalt driveway, it’s best to wait at least six months to a year before applying the first sealcoat to allow the oils in the asphalt to evaporate.
Remember, it’s important to properly prepare your driveway before sealcoating. This includes cleaning it thoroughly, filling any cracks, and repairing any areas of damage. If you’re not comfortable doing it yourself, consider hiring a professional.
As always, it’s best to consult with a local expert who can evaluate the specific conditions of your driveway and the local climate.
